Beach Cruiser Bicycles: How to Select the Proper Size Bicycle

You could ride a bicycle of any size. Circus clowns do, but don't they look uncomfortable not to mention silly! Whether riding for pleasure, exercise or transportation the journey should be as safe and as comfortable as possible. Choosing the correct size is one of the most important factors when purchasing a beach cruiser bicycle.

A frame that is too large will cause difficulty getting on and off the bicycle and may cause the rider to fall over when stopping. Conversely, a frame that is too small will cause inefficient pedaling and leg discomfort. The frame size of the bicycle can roughly be determined by the height of the individual. Average height people will be able to comfortably ride several sized bicycles simply by adjusting the seat height. On the other hand, it will be necessary for shorter or taller adults and children to "try on" the bicycle before purchasing. Sizing charts are a guideline based on the height of the person but fail to take into consideration the person's leg to torso proportions. Therefore a long-legged person may need a larger frame bicycle than someone of the same height with shorter legs. The best way to determine frame size is to sit on the bicycle. With the seat adjusted to the middle position, the tips of both feet should touch the ground. Additionally, the legs should fully extend when the pedal is at the lowest level with the feet keeping full contact with the pedal. The seat height can be tweaked slightly as needed. Another reference point for men is to stand in front of the seat and ensure that there is at least one inch between the highest point of the crouch and the top tube of the frame. Also while sitting on the bicycle reach for the handlebars. Are they too high or too low? Are they too close or too far away? The handlebars on most bicycles are adjustable for additional comfort.

Awesome looking beach cruiser bicycles for children should be selected carefully, as the correct size is of utmost importance for their safety. A bicycle that is too big for a child will cause problems getting on and off, reaching the pedals and handle bars and decrease their overall control of the bicycle. This may undermine the child's confidence and decrease their interest in bicycling. Riding bikes should be a fun activity, not one that might cause injury to the child. Bicycles for children are measured by wheel size, not frame size. Sizing charts are helpful but as with adults, the best way to determine the best fit is to sit on the bicycle. Adjust the seat at the lowest position to fit for height. Make sure that the feet are in full contact with the pedals so the coaster brakes can be applied. Adjust the handlebars for comfort. Remember, children grow fast so frequent adjustments to the seat height may be necessary.

Don't be a clown! Take the time to choose the correct size beach cruiser that will provide years of enjoyable and safe riding.
