Factors to Consider When Buying a Mountain Bike

Mountain biking has become quite popular in the last few years. The sport is a challenging and exciting one, attracting more and more people to take up mountain biking. Mountain bikes are good for treading in hilly areas. They can be used on roads too, which is why you can invest in them if you want to take your bike both on-road and off-road.

Here are some factors you will need to consider if you want to buy a mountain bike:

Types

Mountain bikes are available in two types: hardtail mountain bicycles and full suspension mountain bicycles. Each has its own proponents and opponents but they both do justice to their jobs, for which they are designed.

Full suspension bicycle have front and rear suspension integrated into the bike's frame. It will consist of two pieces, a front triangle and a rear triangle.

A hardtail bike, on the other hand, will have no rear suspension integrated into the frame. There is a heated debate among cyclists, whether full suspension cycles are better or hardtail ones are. However, it all depends on a rider's personal preference, riding style and the purpose for which they will use the bike, which brings us to the next point.

Purpose

Hardtail bikes are best if you want to ride a smooth, single track and need a lighter bike. They are ideal for off-road trails, single tracks and racing. They are also less expensive and require lesser maintenance than a full suspension bike, as they have fewer parts.

Full suspension models suit better when you want to ride downhill or on rough terrains and need a smoother ride on the bike. Bumps on the road such as rocks and potholes are absorbed by rear shock and not your body.

For beginner off-road riders, some pro cyclists suggest investing in a hardtail bike, as a full suspension can be too expensive for amateur riders.

Hardtail bikes come in various forms such as fully rigid bikes, which have no suspension at all and singlespeeds which have only one gear. Full suspension bicycles are available as short, medium and long-travel bikes.

Price

This will determine the quality of the bike that you will get. You can get yourself a mountain bike for $1,000 but there will be a world of difference in quality, durability and performance between this and a bike costing $3,000-$4,000.

Time

Prices of mountain bicycle can vary throughout the year. Their sales peak during summer and spring, so it is better if you buy them during winter when their sales drop, which can also earn you a good bargain. If you are a beginner, you can make do with a good model from last year.
