Flat Tires: Different Types of Flat Tires

A flat tire happens because something damages the inner tube. It does not necessarily mean that the tire is damaged also.

Flat tires could be categorized into 4 groups.

1. Pinch cuts. You will get pinch cuts when your tire hits stones or sharp edges. If your tires received strong impact from sharp curbs they might get compressed. The inner tube might be pinched between the rim and the stone. When this happens, pinch cuts would create two holes in the inner tube. Such holes are sometimes referred to as "snake bite" because they appear like the mark left by a snake's fangs.

Usually, the tire would not be damaged. It is the inner tube which would need attention. Your rim can possibly get a dent or a "blip" because of the impact.

2. Slow leaks. They are called "slow" for a reason. It would take some time before your bike gets flat. In fact, you could still ride on it for a while even if it has slow leaks. But later on you will feel that your ride becomes rough and slow because you need to pump your tires.
Slow leaks can be caused by tiny little holes in the inner tube. Replacing the tube is the best thing to do since it can be impossible to spot the hole.

3. Blowouts. These are abrupt losses of air in the inner tube which is frequently accompanied by a loud banging sound. This usually happens when you put too much air into your inner tube and the tire does not hold it very well. It is like a balloon that when air is pumped into it, it will be bigger and will pop when it reaches its maximum stretch capacity.

4. Punctures. These are the most common cause of flat tires. They happen when your tires run over sharp items which can poke holes through your tires. The damage will be worse if such sharp things stab deeper into your tube. Punctures might be caused by nails, thorns, glass debris, or other tiny and sharp things.

The way to fix flat tires caused by punctures is to patch the inner tube. If patching is not enough, replacing the inner tube would be the best remedy. Removing the sharp thing which gave you the headache is fundamental.

However, if your bike has tires with slimed tubes that allow self-repairing flat prevention, you simply need to get rid of the sharp object and your tire will instantly be back shape.
