Bicycle Socks - Two Things You Need to Know

You can cycle with sandals and slippers, but anyone will tell you that if you want to be a serious cyclist, you need to invest in proper cycling shoes. Of course, that also means that one should complement the shoes with socks, right? What you should be wary of is that wearing the wrong socks can actually slow you down and disrupt your target travelling distance. Socks not only work to absorb the sweat from your feet, but also work to provide cushioning for your feet which are constantly in motion.

Be Wary of the Sock Material

When it comes to socks, thicker material does not mean that it's better, even if it is on sale. One should only be donned with cycling socks that are made up of thin fabric as the longer you pedal, the larger your feet will become due to swelling. A swollen foot will not feel particularly comfortable especially when it's compressed in a shoe and thick socks. Worse, you may actually find your feet throbbing with pain especially when you travel for exceptionally long distances.

A good sock material for cycling would be man-made fabrics that not only absorb moisture, but also do well to prevent chaffing and blisters. Whatever you do, avoid bicycle socks made up entirely of pure cotton as cotton will stiffen when it is wet and quite basically cause blisters. The cotton sock is also much more economical as compared to socks which are able to wick moisture away.

The Lesser the Seams, the Better

Bicycle socks can come in all sorts of patterns and colours to suit the biker's personality, but what it should definitely come with is less seams. As mentioned, swollen feet will grow bigger, and the tender tissue will be pressed up against the seams. If you do for some odd reason, find a liking for cycling in the winter, opt for winter socks that still fit these descriptions - thin fabric with few seams and constructed from open-weave construction.
