Bicycle Theft: Top Tips to Stop Your Bike Being Stolen

Bike theft is on the rise in London, so it's time to make a useful New Years Resolution: I will secure my bike so that thieves will never get it!

Steps to Bike Security:

1. Consider your lock. Is it sufficient? A U-lock is better than a cable, but having both types is the best.

2. Tips on using a U-lock: The U-portion of the lock should be tight, so that the thief cannot fit a tool within it.
Position the lock so the place for the key faces down. And, don't position the lock near the ground, where it can more easily be smashed by the thief. You might consider using more than one U-lock, especially if you must frequently lock your bike in an area where theft is common.

3. Using your cable lock: Always secure your components and accessories with a cable lock, even though you have secured your bike with a U-lock.

3. Make the right choice every time. Do you sometimes hurry away from your bike because you think you're in an area where there are no thieves? Always lock your bike, even when you think you're in a safe place.

4. Secure your bike the right way. Lock your bike to an object that cannot be moved, cut, or removed. Check that the thief cannot lift your bike over the object to which it is locked. Do not lock your bike to itself!

5. Choose your location. Try to lock your bike in a well-lit area. Don't lock it in the same place every day, where thieves might notice a pattern they can take advantage of. When possible, choose a location where there are other bikes. Thieves will usually go for the easiest target; you know yours isn't!

6. Perform a security check. Make one last check of the lock before you walk away from your bike.

7. Register your bike. You can try firms like immobilise.com as well as the National Property Register.

8. Have records you can show the police in case of theft. Record the frame number and take a photo of your bike; keep both in a folder you can find easily.

9. If you have insurance, talk to your agent to see whether your bike is covered in case of theft.
