BMX Racing for Young and Biking Enthusiasts - Few Things You Should Know

BMX racing is actually a very fun oriented sport that you can enjoy with friends and family but it is sad that a majority of people who own 20" bikes do not race. Racing BMX bikes locally is cheap, while traveling to other communities or to the big race events can be quite costly. If you decide that you would like to take up BMX bike racing, then this article will help to inform you of some basic things that any BMX racing bike enthusiast should know.

The first thing you should do is to check with the American Bicycle Association (ABA) and the National Bicycle League (NBL) about having a trial membership. From here, you can really determine if racing BMX bikes is what you like or it can also help you decide that maybe you are not cut out for the sport. You could also find out from them where the races in your area or community are held, so you can just be a spectator first. Entrance is free, so you have nothing to lose.

Before you can start racing, you will need to get a BMX racing bike. You do not need to get the most expensive bike you can, just a cheap one meant for racing will do. This is just for starters, once you get used to handling the bike or you have progressed to a much higher level, then you can buy a better BMX bike. It will cost you considerably more to get a good quality bike, but if you were to buy one of good quality than it would last quite awhile. If you do not have the budget to buy a new bike, check your local flea markets, pawn shops, bike shops or maybe the bulletin board at your local store for ads from individuals whoa re selling their bike.

Once you have your BMX racing bike, remove the pads covering the handlebar crossbar, the stem, and the top tube of your bike. Make sure your bike is tuned up, check your tires and make sure that your handlebars are not sticking through the end of your grips. You should have a freewheel on your back wheel so that you can pedal backwards without the brakes getting in the way and use hand brakes put on your handlebars. Get a helmet; you can borrow this from your race track if you don't have one. Get a full face helmet for better protection, but an open faced one would work too, you just need to get a mouth guard. You should also wear a long sleeve shirt and pants, there is no need for jerseys or sponsors.

On the day of the race, get to the BMX racing bikes track early. You will need to have a look at the race area, register and get your number. You will be indentified by this number through the entire race. If this is your first race, take it slow, watch how the others do it, how the speed up, slow down, take corners and jump. It takes time and practice, so do not be disappointed if you don't win your first race.

There is much pleasure to be found in owning a BMX racing bike, whether it's the travelling to join competitions, or just racing in your own community. You will have had fun and enjoyed yourself. Good luck!
