Confidence: The Missing Key To Consistency

How often have you told yourself to keep your head down, and then proceeded to skull the ball over the green? In a conscious attempt to prevent a repeat performance, you overcompensate and hit the ground a foot behind the ball.

Been there, done that.

How do you talk to yourself after a poor shot - in a positive or negative tone? Which shots elicit a stronger emotional response - the good ones or the poor ones?

If the predominant memory is hitting the ground a foot behind the ball, the attempt to self-correct before the next shot could prove very interesting.

Your nervous system does not respond effectively to conscious (negative) thought - it responds to the predominant feel. If the most vivid image is one of previous success, you feel confident and have a decent chance of making solid contact.

The "secret" to confidence (and consistency) is your ability to recall the memories of success. These memories inspire the optimum feel, that allow you to focus on where you want the ball to go, instead of looking at the obstacles you're trying to avoid.

Have you ever hit a perfect shot? Can you recall what you were thinking?

The chances are, that you can recall the feeling of effortless, which transcends conscious thought. Your swing is a by-product of how you feel.

How do you gain confidence? The answer is twofold: first, develop a technique for letting go of the poor shots and second, learn how to reinforce the feel of your best ones. Sounds simple enough doesn't it? The first step is awareness. Stop beating yourself up after a poor shot.

Traditional golf instruction is based on the belief that making a student aware of their swing flaws will, eventually, lead to permanent improvement.

Unfortunately, this practice often instills the feeling that a student will never be good enough to stop thinking about proper technique. As soon as you "fix" one mistake, another one appears. It's a vicious cycle.

Are you familiar with a pre-shot routine? An effective pre-shot routine can bridge the gap between knowledge and results. The basic goal is to help you forget swing mechanics for one-and-a-half seconds and just hit the damn ball!

In the next article, we look at some common elements found in the pre-shot routines of the worlds' best players and see how you can adapt them to improve your game.
