8 Ball is played with a cue ball, an 8 ball, and fifteen other balls number 1 through 15. 1 through 7 are solid colors and balls 9 through 15 are different color stripes. One player must hit in the pockets solid colors while the other player hits in the stripe balls. First player to hit in all their own balls plus the 8 ball wins.
There are four general phases to the 8 ball game, the setup, breaking, taking turns, and pocketing the 8 ball.
The Setup
To begin the game all the balls except the cue is put into the triangle (known as the rack) at one end of the pool table with the 8 ball the middle of the rack and on the two corners one solid and one stripe at the other corner, and all others go into the rack around that. Remove the rack and keep the balls into place now you are ready to play. Place the cue ball at the other end of the table. Now you are ready for phase 2 the break.
The Break
One player is chosen to break by maybe loser of last game breaks, rock, paper, scissors, flip a coin, lag (each player shoots a ball from one end of the pool table to hit the wall at one end and back to the other. The player closes to the wall (or rail) wins the lag and has the option to break or pass the break to the opponent) etc...
For the break shot to be legal the breaker with the cue ball must either pocket a ball or have four balls hit the back rail, when the breaker fails to do that it is a foul. When the foul occurs the opponent has the option of re-rack or placing the cue ball anywhere on the table before the half line and shooting from there. If the breaker pockets a ball his play continues until he does not make a shot. The choice of stripes or solids happen during the break or during the taking turns. The choice of stripes or solids is not determined on the break even if balls are pocketed because the table is open immediately after the break. The choice of group comes when a player legally pockets a ball after the break shot. Whatever group is chosen then the other player becomes the other group.
Taking Turns
A player will continue their turn until a foul occurs or they fail to pocket a ball. Then it becomes the opponents turn. Play continues until all their group has been pocketed plus legally pockets the 8 ball.
Pocketing the 8 Ball
When pocketing the 8 ball one must call the shot. Which means the player must pick and tell his opponent which pocket the 8 ball will go into. If the 8 ball goes into the correctly called pocket then that player wins. If the ball does not go into a pocket that player turn is over and it becomes the opponents turn. Once the 8 ball is pocketed correctly and that player has pocketed their group then the game is over.
Fouls
During the game fouls can occur. Here are some of the fouls. Scratch on the break. Balls jumps off the table. 8 Ball gets pocket during the break or during the turns before their group has been pocketed. If this happens the player that pocketed the 8 ball illegally loses. If a foul occurs the opponent can place the cue anywhere before the half line on the table and play continues. If a foul occurs with the 8 ball game is over.
