Once you have been running for quite a while, you will probably decide that you want to start running longer distances. When you run long, there are a few things that you need to think about. One of these things is what to do if you have to go to the bathroom. It will happen to you at one time or another. Read on for solutions to this problem.
Yes, it will happen. You are out on a 2 hour run and nature calls. It may be because you possibly ate something that you shouldn't have the night before - please stay away from fiber! - or it could simply just be that you are hydrating well and need to relieve yourself. It happens to all runners.
A great place to take care of this is bathrooms at a park. Ball parks have bathrooms as do most city parks. Another great thing about stopping at a park is that there are usually water fountains there, also. So, you can take in some more water at the same time.
Convenience stores are another place that you can stop. On runs of more than an hour, it's a good idea to plan to stop for water, anyway. Since, you're already there; you can take care of this, also. Generally, I won't stop to just use the bathroom somewhere unless I purchase something. I just think that it's the polite thing to do.
You can also sneak into a fast food restaurant that may be on your path. I generally won't do this - for the reason listed above. But, I have been known to do so when I really need to.
Another place to stop is a wooded area. Now, I know what you're probably thinking, but trust me, if you have to - you will stop behind a tree. Ask any runner that you know that has been running long distances for quite a while - and I'll almost guarantee you that they have. If you know that you are a mile or more away from a store, park, etc and you have a problem - you will do it, too.
When planning for your longer running routes, it's a great idea to plan them so that there are areas that have somewhere for you to stop. Chances are you won't have to - but it's always a good idea to be prepared. You just never know when nature will call!
Running is a simple sport - but there are also many things that you need to know and be aware of. Sign up for my Free weekly newsletter at Runner For Life for advice to stay out on the roads and keep running for life.
