Turn Your Billiard Room Into A Multipurpose Family Room And A Reflection Of Your Personality

1. If you have small children it stands to reason that you would want them around while you enjoy shooting a game of pool. Combining your billiard room with a playroom can free up space in other rooms in your house while instilling the love of the game in your children at a very young age. From putting a playpen in the corner of the room (so you can shoot a game while they nap), to a toy center for your toddlers, to a craft center for preschoolers and up. Transforming the room back to a total man cave for night of billiards with your friends is as easy as purchasing a couple of room dividers. This is a very inexpensive way of creating an all family member room.

2. What about making a family game room? There are several styles of table tennis conversion sets on the market to put over your pool table. These are typically very easy to install and give yet another option for hour and hours of fun. Consider adding a poker table. Poker tables are also a great area to play any board game. You will probably want to set aside an area to have some shelving to store all the great games waiting to be discovered. It almost goes without saying: a dart board seems to be a very natural addition to your billiard area. Stalking up on these games at Christmas to enjoy in all seasons is a great gift idea.

3. I Have yet to mention a built-in bar! So as not to let this sector of society down: I personally find a rum and cola goes down very well while shooting a favorite pool game with my friends. I feel a full size fridge is the best companion for a pool table. The convenience of not having to run to the kitchen every time you want to satisfy your guests varied tastes is worth more than the difference in the cost of a bar sized fridge. So whether they feel like a shooter (pun intended), a beer or a high ball you will be able to graciously provide their beverage without delaying the game. If room allows I would highly recommend installing an automatic dish washer. After all, who wants to spend your time hand washing or packing up all those glasses and snack trays to the kitchen after an enjoyable night. Play longer, spend less time cleaning up!

4. One of my favorite billiard rooms of all time incorporated the home owners love of antiques in their decor. They arranged several hand-crank phonographs strategically around the room, along with a couple of antique telephones (just in case your cell phone doesn't get reception). They even had some treadle sewing machines set in place (in full working condition) in the event you had the unfortunate luck to split your pants while reaching for that difficult shot. The smaller accents in the room included coal oil lamps, match bins, creme cans and a butter churn. The walls had very ornate antique framed pictures of ancestors. The room truly was a perfect reflection of the owners.

5. I once stumbled across a back road pool hall that had beautiful metal pieces mounted on the walls that formed an old west scene. The artist had cleverly cut and welded pieces into the shape of an old-fashioned saloon, complete with a hitching rail, and several mounted ranch hands riding up to it. I think the simplicity of the times was well depicted by the simple black mat paint finish and was a great contrast to the detail in the design. Color-changing spot lights set off this feature wall and brought to mind northern lights in the sky above the cowboy's heads. I felt like I had walked into a night in the old west and was ready to join the folks in a shot of whiskey and a game of pool.

I have just scratched the surface of ideas to transform your billiard room into a room that totally depicts you and your family. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. I hope you have found some inspiration to create the space that suits you best. Have fun designing and always remember to 'chalk it up'!
