What Is a Fixie?

A road bike is light weight and fast. A city has paved roads. Join the dots. It's no wonder road bikes are ever so popular in the city. They do not need the suspensions of mountain bikes as they are hardly required to conquer rugged terrain.

As road-bikes have a streamlined body and are ultra light as well, they can achieve amazing speeds even in short distances, whether it be a racing bike or a commuter bike.

Another kind of it is slowly gaining cult status - the often brakeless, gearless fixed wheel bike, or as it is affectionately called in US, a fixie. Due to its aesthetic quality of doing away with the bulkiness of brakes, it is gaining a loyal fan base all over the world.

A fixie does not let you glide without pedalling; it makes you a disciplined cyclist. Because the pedals are fixed to a chainless hub in the rear wheel, freewheeling becomes impossible, just like brakes become obsolete.

If you are a normal road bike person, then riding a fixed wheel bike might not be a piece of cake. Good practice is required before taking it out on the violent road. A curve where you cannot stop pedalling might be the end of the ride.

All the parts of a fixie and regular road bike are common, like pedals, chains, frame, handles, saddle, etc.; all but one difference - a fixie can chose not to have brakes but a road bike does not have that luxury.

To compensate for all the people who unwisely polluted our world, as cyclists it is our duty to make things right by riding more often. Every time we commute within a localised area, taking the bicycle instead of the car is a noble idea.

Keeping heart disease at a far distance is easy too; all you need to do is ride a cycle regularly.
