What's The Best Way to Customise Your Bike?

Cycling is rising in popularity. Over the last few years as bikes have gotten cheaper, technology has advanced, and cycle lanes have been incorporated into more and more cities the number of people who use bikes every day has increased. The problem with this though is that your pride and joy which was once the envy of every other commuter is just another of the run of the mill bicycles pootling up and down the road network.

If you want to get back your feeling of uniqueness again, like you're the pedal version of 'Easy Rider' on your way to work, here is some advice on the best way to go about customising it.

DIY

Obviously one of the cheapest ways to customise your bike is to do it yourself. There are many shops (especially online) which offer you a full range of parts and accessories which you can add to your existing bike. These might include special forks and brakes or maybe a new seat. What you can also do if you are really handy, is to make your own custom bike parts. For example you could build a seat that is moulded to the exact shape of your buttocks, or a new revolutionary shape of bike frame that you can then sell to the major bike manufacturers.

At a shop

If doing it yourself is maybe a bit too much, then there are many shops which you can take it to who will do all the customisations that you want. This will of course be a lot more expensive but at least you will know that everything fitted will be to a high standard and less likely to fall apart. They will be able to provide a range of parts as well such as BMX grips or BMX pedals which you may not be able to get yourself.

Buy one Ready Made

Probably the best way to customise your bike is just to throw it away and start again. This is of course not really customising but with bikes only getting cheaper and cheaper you may save money by buying a new bike instead of altering your existing one. Plus, over time, every part of your bike experiences wear and tear that you may not notice until I falls apart as you cycle down a particularly steep hill covered in horse manure. There are always deals online, at local bike shops and at bigger big superstores so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one.

Sam Qam is a BMX racer. He has designed a special range of BMX grips and BMX pedals that improve racing performance by more than 20% but the precious metals used to create them are very expensive.
